Braswell Family Farms in Nashville, NC is seeking a Director of People & Culture.  This person will be responsible for managing all aspects of employee relations and culture development from hiring to retirement for ~200+ employees located in NC and VA.  The Director of People & Culture, will be a strategic member of Braswell Family Farms’ executive management team and will contribute to the business’ overall success by assisting in developing, leading, influencing and / or guiding the following processes: Company culture branding, goal setting; talent selection; employee relations; performance management; succession planning; training & leadership development; talent assessment; HRIS support; development & decision support; health & safety programs; and compensation / benefit strategy & plans.

The Director of People & Culture will report to the Integrator to ensure that HR best practices and continuous improvement are implemented across all lines of business, with local cultures respected each step of the way. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Creates and oversees the people-development process that ensures Braswell employees know and embrace our Purpose and our Core Values.

  • Oversees all aspects of HR administration, and supervises administrative staff handling HR duties (e.g. employee benefits programs, compensation and performance management, training and development, records management, safety, succession planning, employee recruitment, relations, and retention, and AA/EEO compliance)

  • Develops and evolves HR organizational strategies to align with the strategic goals of the organization.

  • Drives processes to support the business by building a high performing organization through performance management activities, workforce planning and management development programs.

  • Provides strategic leadership in the design and implementation of the company’s employee benefit programs and oversees the annual enrollment process.

  • Leads the company’s safety program and oversees the claims administration process.

  • Designs and supports employee recruiting and retention programs.

  • Ensures that Braswell Family Farms has competitive compensation and benefit programs to attract and retain top talent.

  • Oversee employee relations issues, as needed, and provide conflict management training to managers to empower them in this area.

  • Responsible for the overall design and operation of the company’s employee performance management system.

  • Provides coaching, training, and counseling to managers to help them create a people- development culture in their respective departments.

  • Participates in forecasting and anticipating staffing needs throughout the organization, including use of contract labor.

  • Stays current on existing and new legislation to ensure that Braswell Family Farms is fully compliant with federal, state, and local legal requirements regarding personnel, informs executive management, and enforces company-wide adherence.

  • Translates Braswell’s strategic objectives into employee care and culture development strategies that create a source of sustainable competitive advantage for the business.

  • Develops and administers company training programs designed to identify competency, knowledge and talent gaps and ensure compliance with required training regulations. 

  • Management oversite for all employee activities, activity teams, Caring Team, Safety Committee, etc.

  • Guides management and employee actions by researching, developing, writing, and updating policies, procedures, job descriptions, methods, and guidelines; communicating; enforcing organization values and employer branding.

  • Responsible for HR information, metrics, analysis, and recommendations to the organization.

  • Helps drive all of BFF’s Environment Management Systems (EMS) in an impactful manner to include monitoring/reducing operationally related negative effects on the environment as well as pollution prevention.

 

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Excitement for and alignment with Braswell Family Farms’ faith-driven purpose and values.

  • EOS experience is preferred.

  • BA/BS required; master’s degree (Human Resources or related field) and SHRM Certification is preferred.

    • 8+ years as an HR Manager with strong multi-site (ideally) Leadership / Management & Organizational Development experience in a manufacturing / service / distribution-oriented business; experience within an agriculture/poultry-based business a plus.

    • Willing to travel to multiple sites in NC and VA on a regular basis to support business and occasional national travel for HR related conferences and training.

    • Experience and passion for establishing and designing high performing HR core processes.

    • Proven ability to challenge, motivate and partner with an executive leadership team to foster innovation and lead change in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

    • Exceptional success in talent management: sourcing, acquiring, assessing, developing (on boarding; training in adult learning; leadership development) and retaining staff.

    • Excellent communication skills.

    • Broad exposure to all Human resources functions, including culture development, change management, recruiting, employee retention, safety, workforce planning, organization development, compensation, benefits, performance management, HRIS and administration.

    • An HR leader with a proven track record of delivering results.

  • High level of personal integrity, ethics, initiative, and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Able to establish a constructive and informative relationship with employees, management, and executives. Confident and capable of serving as the employee advocate with management.

  • Strong knowledge of HR policies, practices, and legal compliance (EEOC, W/C, OSHA, etc.).

  • Broad business sense as well as demonstrated HR-specific competencies.

  • Proven experience leading progressive recruiting strategies:  social media, print, recruiting firms, colleges, promotion from within practices and other alternatives.

  • Ability to present ideas in an easy-to-understand and engaging manner.

  • Highest level of confidentiality.

  • Knowledge and experience in Human Resources systems development.

  • Proven ability to challenge and motivate management teams to foster innovation in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

  • Ability to assist in goal accomplishment, effectively relating human and non-human resources to the HR processes for the corporation.

  • Metric and results oriented.

  • Can “get into the details”, while managing them in a strategic fashion.

  • Creative thinker; fast on feet; proactive versus reactive.

  • Able to drive change throughout the organization.

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a BIG plus.

 

 Key Areas of Initial Focus

  • Build relationships with employees across the organization and get involved with the company’s Business as a Ministry initiative.

  • Administer the employee satisfaction survey.

  • Supporting new employee benefit administration provider and roll out electronic open enrollment.

  • Build relationships with liability insurance resources and lead the safety committee in their annual plan.

  • Facilitate end of year annual performance evaluation process.

  • Manage EOS scorecard measurables.

 

Physical Requirement/Work Environment

  • Must be able to adapt to office work environments which could include cold, heat.

  • Data entry while seated for more than one (1) hour.

  • Must possess the ability to work in an agricultural environment, indoors, outdoors, office, warehouse, processing, and farm production areas each varying in temperature, odor, and other environment specific atmospheres.
