Egg Strength Test

Eggshells might seem fragile, but they're surprisingly strong! Put their strength to the test by seeing how much weight a group of eggs can support before cracking.

Ingredients

  • 4–6 raw eggs (plus extras, just in case!)

  • Egg carton or another stable egg holder

  • Flat, sturdy board or tray

  • Books or other stackable objects

  • Towels or a protective covering

Directions

  1. Cover your workspace with a towel or protective surface to catch any potential mess.

  2. Arrange four to six raw eggs upright in a stable egg carton or holder, making sure they're positioned at an even height.

  3. Carefully place a flat, sturdy board on top of the eggs to distribute weight evenly.

  4. Slowly add one lightweight book to the board.

  5. Continue adding books one at a time, observing how the eggs respond.

  6. Record how much weight the eggs can support before any begin to crack. Stop if the setup becomes unstable.

  7. Try adjusting the number of eggs or their arrangement to see whether it changes the results.

The Science Behind It

An eggshell's curved shape helps distribute pressure across its surface, making it remarkably strong when force is applied evenly. This is similar to how arches are used in bridges and buildings!

Although eggs can crack easily from a sharp impact or uneven pressure, their shape allows them to support a surprising amount of evenly distributed weight.
